Alyssa Milano, the former star of television shows Who’s the Boss and Charmed, has joined the cast of Atari’s hotly anticipated Ghostbusters: The Video Game. She will play the role of Dr Ilyssa Selwyn, a "smart and sassy" archaeologist who provides the love interest for Dr Peter Venkman (voiced by Bill Murray). As with Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) in the first movie, Venkman’s ardour is in no way reciprocated.

The press release detailing her involvement has revealed more information about the game’s storyline. The game is set in 1991 (two years after the second movie), and will follow events surrounding a "World of Gozer" exhibition at the Natural History Museum in New York City. The exhibition inadvertently summons an ancient enemy who returns to wreak havoc on the city’s inhabitants. (We’re betting it’s Gozer.)

It’s subsequently up to the Ghostbusters to help Ilyssa uncover the key to the supernatural threat and save the world again. Players take on the role of a new Ghostbusters recruit who joins the team just as a new paranormal plague hits the city.

The plot has been penned by original Ghostbusters writers Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd, who also lend their voices to the characters Egon Spengler and Ray Stanz in the game. Atari has promised that the game will recreate the unique blend of humour and horror that turned the original film into a pop culture sensation

Ghostbusters: The Video Game will be available on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS. It is due to hit stores in June 2009 to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the film’s original theatrical release.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
