HP Takes the Lead in Handheld Computing Market in Q3

 • 15 December, 2003 12:26

SYDNEY, December 15, 2003 HP has claimed the number one position, and title of Australian market leader for handhelds in Q3, according to the latest IDC figures. HP's iPAQ Pocket PC market share increased to 47.1 per cent in Q3, up 13.9 per cent from the previous quarter. The nearest competitor had a market share of 36.2 per cent.

Imraan Ali, Market Analyst, IDC Australia said, "HP's handheld products have become much more consumer focused in recent times. This, accompanied by an expansion in its retail channel and continued price aggression, have been the two major contributing factors to the vendor's strong performance."

Julianne Bean, Market Development Manager, Smart Handhelds, Personal Systems Group, HP Australia attributed the success to the strong focus from HP's retail partners, and customer acceptance of HP's diverse new iPAQ Pocket PC range.

"This market share lead is not only a clear indication that we have the right products at the right price points, but we are also delivering on our promise to drive industry leading innovation that connects people and businesses with their critical information," said Bean.

"Customers are seeking a range of technologies through the iPAQ product line, including wireless connectivity and expandability that empowers them to be more productive at home, at work or on the go."

HP also puts the successful quarter down to the expansion of its iPAQ product line to meet the need of every customer from first time users, right through to the enterprise, an increase in consumer adoption for a user friendly, mobile solution, and strong customer relationships.

HP continuously looks to ensure customers get more out of their handheld purchase. With this in mind, HP, with the help of its retail partners, is offering customers $149.00 worth of free audio accessories over the Christmas season, with the purchase of any iPAQ Pocket PC from now until December 31, 2003.

This music pack allows customers to use their HP iPAQ Pocket PC to listen to MP3s wirelessly through any FM stereo receiver including their car. All customers need to do is fill out the redemption coupon at their nearest retail outlet, and send it to HP with a money order, or cheque for $14.95 to cover postage & handling.

"We look forward to building upon our market leadership by continuing to deliver innovative products, and by further strengthening our retail partnerships and presence over the Christmas period and 2004," concluded Bean.
