SpringSource acquires open source management software maker

SpringSource acquires Hyperic to offer Java application life-cycle suite

Enterprise Java vendor SpringSource has acquired for an undisclosed sum Hyperic, a maker of open source system and application management software.

The acquisition will enable SpringSource to offer customers a Java application life-cycle solution, the company says, that starts with developing Java applications and runs throughout the management of the applications on production systems. Hyperic's technology will contribute to the latter part of that process, the vendors said in a joint press release.

"The acquisition of Hyperic enables SpringSource to provide a complete, proven suite of lean application infrastructure software products that enable enterprises to accelerate the build, run and manage application life cycle within the data center, virtual or cloud computing environments," said SpringSource CEO Rod Johnson in a statement.

SpringSource offers a suite of products to accelerate the development of Java applications. The vendor now can add Hyperic's HQ technology to provide run-time management capabilities as well as help Java developers build management into applications. Hyperic HQ is actually a hybrid product of sorts -- part open source and part proprietary technologies. Hyperic was spun out of Covalent, which focused on the security and support needs of the Apache Web Server, and Hyperic took Covalent Application Manager and broadened its reach to include the ability to manage the entire Web and open source infrastructure stack.

According to a blog posted on Hyperic's Web site Monday by CEO Javier Soltero, SpringSource will remain committed to Hyperic's management capabilities, which the vendor recently extended into cloud computing environments.

"As part of this acquisition, Hyperic's stellar team will combine with SpringSource's to create a world-class staff of the most creative product, support, marketing and sales people in the industry. This means that our customers and partners will continue to receive the same high level of product support and innovation from the same folks they have enjoyed working with," Soltero wrote. "I will continue to own and focus on the vision for management and cloud products and will join SpringSource as CTO of Management Products."

Johnson also said Monday in a blog posted on SpringSource's Web site that the vendors' work over the past two years on products such as SpringSource Application Management Suite ensures the acquisition will be successful.

"This has led us not merely to the conclusion that through combining the companies we will be able to move to a deeper level of technical integration, but that the teams are compatible," Johnson wrote.
