McDATA Lowers Storage Networking TCO with New 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel Director Capability

 • 05 April, 2006 12:45

Empowers Greater Network Consolidation, Optimised Speeds and Protects Technology Investments

Sydney, Australia. - 5 April 2006 -McDATA Corporation, a leading provider of storage networking solutions, today announced the ability to lower TCO (total cost of ownership) through storage network consolidation and increased data movement speeds with the introduction of the non-disruptive 4 Gb/s QPM Blade for Intrepid 6140 Directors.

Meeting McDATA's customer driven standards for solutions that help consolidate, optimise and protect data, the new 4 Gb/s director technology enables customers to back up their existing data sets in nearly half the time it previously took with 2 Gb/s technology. The 4 Gb/s blade also has the same distance support as 2 Gb/s solutions, which will enable customers to deploy increased bandwidth without adding costly repeaters. McDATA continues to provide customers the most flexible platforms for building their storage area networks by being the first vendor to offer the full line of Fibre Channel speeds - 1-, 2-, 4- and 10 Gb/s - while allowing customers to continue to leverage their existing technology investments.

In addition to allowing faster backups, the increased bandwidth will also benefit data intensive applications like geophysical mapping and video processing. 4 Gb/s technology enables ISL consolidation for intra-SAN communication, reducing the cable count between directors and thus management costs and the chance of failure.

Unlike other 4 Gb/s director class solutions in the market today, customers do not need to purchase a new director or new control processors to deploy McDATA's 4 Gb/s technology.

McDATA's 4 Gb/s blade offering can be introduced into any existing Intrepid 6140 Director non-disruptively with the granularity to better align with customers' business needs and budgetary requirements. Customers can convert ports to 4 Gb/s throughput speeds in four-port increments to avoid costly and disruptive wide-scale forklift upgrades. Competitive offerings require a much higher capital outlay since they can only be acquired in 12 or higher port increments, thereby increasing the overall initial capital cost of deploying 4 Gb/s technology.

"McDATA creates technology solutions that meet customers' business requirements," said Raj Das, vice president of product marketing, McDATA. "The availability of this new 4 Gb/s capability, along with the recent release of McDATA's 10 Gb/s blade, gives Intrepid 6140 customers the ability to consolidate and optimise their data networks without having to completely rip and replace their existing technology. With more than 15,000 Intrepid 6000 family directors deployed worldwide, McDATA has the proven experience to deliver on solutions that minimise capex and opex, allowing enterprise customers to do more with less and preserve their investments into the future."

The Intrepid 6000 4 Gb/s blade for the Intrepid 6140 will be available in Q206 through McDATA direct sales, McDATA OEM partners and independent channel and reseller partners.
