F-Secure Detects New Class-Zero-Message Tool

F-Secure has detected HushSMS, a ‘Silent Ping’ tool that finds out if somebody's phone is on or off, without the alerting the phone’s owner.
 • 22 May, 2009 09:00

HushSMS lets you send a class zero message (aka Flash-SMS or stealthy PING message) to another mobile phone. The message is discarded on the owner’s phone and no trace exists.

The sender will get back a message from the operator that their message has been delivered, thus knowing that the phone is switched on. The tool exploits a vulnerability in Windows Mobile 5 and 6 based PocketPCs.

HushSMS claims on their website zero class messaging is a freeware solution for professionals who need to check if someone’s phone is switched on, to send “information to that phone without it being stored”.

Chief Research Officer Mikko Hypponen, explains: “HushSMS, just like other mobile spying tools, operate in a grey zone. Whilst not being illegal, someone with the wrong intentions can use them to monitor someone’s mobile phone usage and potentially steal personal information.”

FlexiSpy is another mobile spying tool that, despite making headlines in the past, is still openly available on the Internet. Marketed as a solution to catch cheating spouses, FlexiSpy allows a user to eavesdrop on someone’s mobile phone conversations, read text messages and even remotely turn on the microphone.
