End of financial year deals: pay bargain basement prices for 10in netbooks

Grab a mini-notebook for a great price!

It's turning out to be the year of the netbook. So far we've had new netbooks from ASUS, Acer, Dell, HP, MSI, Samsung and Toshiba — all 10in models — while Fujitsu is planning to release its new models in the coming weeks. As the end of the financial year bears down on us, the major Australian retailers are offering specials until June 30 — and in some cases further incentives such as cash back on top of their specials — for some popular netbooks.

Dick Smith Electronics, Harvey Norman and JB Hi-Fi are three of the retailers giving cash back on certain netbooks, while Bing Lee will let you negotiate for the best price and The Good Guys will give it to you for less if you pay cash. The cash-back offers range from $50 to $100 off the price, so now is definitely the time to buy a netbook for school, for the office, or for your next round the world trip!

Here are five great Windows XP–based netbooks that you can pick up for much less than their recommended retail price.

Note: the configurations (storage capacity and amount of RAM) of the reviewed models might vary slightly to what you will find in the stores.

1. HP Mini Note 1001TU

The HP Mini Note 1001TU has plenty of style and is comfortable to use. It's short on features compared to other netbooks — for example, it only has two USB 2.0 ports and lacks a D-Sub port for connecting an external monitor. Nevertheless it's a sweet little unit that can be purchased from JB Hi-Fi for $543 after $100 cash back or $599 after $100 cash back from The Good Guys.

2. Toshiba NB200

We absolutely love this 10in netbook, which looks good, feels great to use, and has some features not found in other netbooks. It has a Sleep-and-Charge USB port, so you can charge your devices (including the iPhone) while the netbook is off or in sleep mode, and it also has 3D hard drive protection to prevent data loss. It's currently on sale at JB Hi-Fi for $672 after $100 cash back or $698 after $100 cash back from Dick Smith Electronics.

3. ASUS Eee PC 1000H

The Eee PC 1000H is a 10in netbook with a 160GB drive and fast networking options. This is the netbook to go for if you want Gigabit Ethernet as well as 802.11n wireless networking. JB Hi-Fi has this unit for $673.

4. Acer Aspire One AOD 150

This 10in netbook has arguably the best screen on the market. It's bright, produces excellent colours and has good viewing angles. If you want a netbook with which to watch movies, the Acer Aspire One AOD 150 is it. It can be purchased from JB Hi-Fi for $619 after $79 cash back, which we think is a great price for this netbook.

5. ASUS Eee PC 1000HE

The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE is almost identical to the 1000H, except for its different keyboard design and it also provides better battery life thanks to its 6-cell battery. It's more expensive than the 1000H, but from JB Hi-Fi it's $796 after $89 cash back, which is a good deal nonetheless.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.
