Samsung Australia today announced four new mobile phones with full touch-screen capabilities: the Icon series. The phones in the Icon range are the Samsung Preston Icon, the Samsung Galaxy Icon, the Samsung HD Icon and the Samsung Omnia Icon. The four phones all run different operating systems.

"Samsung is among the earliest members of the Open Handset Alliance. Our strategy, to support every existing operating system, provides Samsung customers with a choice beyond design," said Tyler McGee of Samsung Australia. "We are committed to continuing to strengthen our portfolio of full-touch phones by introducing a variety of handsets in Australia to suit every lifestyle."

The Galaxy Icon will be the first Samsung mobile phone to run the Google Android operating system, while the Omnia Icon runs Windows Mobile 6.1 (and will be upgradeable to Windows Mobile 6.5 when the new version of the OS is released later this year).

The HD Icon is the first full touch-screen Samsung handset to run the Symbian OS and includes Samsung's TouchWiz UI for enhanced ease of use. The Galaxy Icon, Omnia Icon and HD Icon all have AMOLED displays, which Samsung claims use less power and offer faster response time and higher contrast than standard LCD screens. The HD Icon and the Omnia Icon both have 3.7in displays — larger than the iPhone's 3.5in, non-AMOLED screen.

The Preston Icon is the entry-level phone in the Icon series and includes Samsung's TouchWiz UI, also used on the UltraTouch. The Preston Icon includes a "smart unlock" feature that enables users to open an application or shortcut by drawing a pre-assigned letter on the screen.

The four Icon series mobile phones will be launched in Australia in August and September, with pricing and carrier details yet to be announced.
