Symantec Phishing Report - July 2009

<p>This report reviews phishing activity throughout the month of June.</p>
<p>A closer observation of phishing tactics in Asia Pacific this past month revealed some interesting highlights:</p>
<p>Symantec observed an overall increase of 21 per cent in phishing attacks in comparison to May</p>
<p>The number of phishing URLs generating using automated phishing toolkits increased by nine per cent. There was a sudden increase in toolkit attacks during the last week of June, largely due to phishers targeting popular social networking sites – a trend that continues to re-emerge</p>
<p>There was a significant increase in the number of free web hosting services used for developing phishing sites, which accounted for 10 per cent of all phishing attacks. This translates to a staggering 96 per cent increase when compared to May</p>
<p>Phishing attacks in Italian, French and Chinese languages were found to be higher in June with Symantec observing a 21 per cent increase</p>
<p>Symantec observed a new technique used in phishing scams targeting the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) where intended victims were asked to supply personal financial details and print a form.</p>
