SenderBase Network from IronPort Systems Grows 10-Fold in 12 Months

 • 20 May, 2004 10:57

Increased network size, new tracking vectors and infrastructure partnerships strengthens SenderBase leadership

Sydney – May 20th, 2004

IronPort Systems™, the world’s leading email security company, has announced that the volume of data tracked by IronPort’s SenderBase Email Traffic Monitoring Database has increased 10-fold over the last 12 months. In addition, the SenderBase network now tracks more than 20 Million IP addresses and 600,000 domains worldwide. The rapid adoption of SenderBase by ISPs, corporations and universities has allowed it to monitor nearly 25 per cent of global email traffic – making it the most robust and comprehensive relational database on email traffic patterns across the globe.

Today, SenderBase,, helps 30,000 mail administrators manage incoming email streams by providing objective data about global email traffic patterns. SenderBase collects data from a diverse set of sources. There are more than 28,000 network owners including ISPs such as and Roadrunner, universities such as Stanford and New York, and corporations such as KeyCorp and Liz Claiborne that query the SenderBase network to access the IronPort Bonded Sender whitelist. In addition, data is collected from SpamCop spam traps, SpamCop blacklist queries and other ISPs and network operators.

“Today, email relies on a framework that has massive security challenges. By providing visibility into global traffic patterns, SenderBase allows receivers to assess a range of threats in real-time,” said Ambika Gadre, Director of Product Management, Information Services at IronPort. “As the world’s largest, most diverse database, SenderBase is an essential component for any organisation wanting to proactively reduce the risks and financial hardship associated with spam and viruses.”

Michael J. Bosch, the Managing Director of IronPort’s newly-launched Australia and New Zealand operation, said the company was seeing very strong interest from telcos, ISPs and other large enterprises in this region for its SenderBase and Bonded Sender Programs.

“Businesses can see the success and benefits that our customers are achieving, such as Microsoft across its Hotmail and MSN services. The Bonded Sender Program for Microsoft Exchange is also now available in Australia,” he said.

New Tracking Vectors:

SenderBase now tracks more than 40 unique vectors on senders, 10 times more than any other database of its kind. SenderBase data sources include global sending volume, complaint levels, country of origin, blacklist information, open proxy status, changes in message volume, duration sending mail and other parameters to assess a sender’s quality or detect anomalies that are indicators of a range of email threats.

New infrastructure partnerships add a layer of Protection:

The power of using email traffic pattern analysis data in an email security solution is clearly demonstrated by the effectiveness of the IronPort Email Security Appliances. These devices catch more than 97 per cent of incoming spam and provide false positive rates of less than one in 1,000,000. This level of performance has earned IronPort appliances rapid adoption in the market, protecting more than 50M mailboxes at the largest ISPs and corporations in the world. Unfortunately, these defenses have proven so effective that illicit senders have targeted denial of service attacks at the SenderBase Network. To defend against these unscrupulous senders, IronPort has partnered with some of the leading infrastructure companies in the world. The SenderBase Infrastructure Alliance includes Akamai, Equinex and Internap and has defended repeated attempts by unscrupulous senders to bring down the service.

The rapid growth of SenderBase has been fuelled in part by IronPort’s decision to make SenderBase an open database. Leading open-source solutions such as spam assassin rely on data from SenderBase and IronPort provides plug-in software for popular open-source MTA programs such as Sendmail, qmail and Postfix.
