PlayStation 3 VidZone Q&A

We chat to VidZone's Louisa Jackson about the PlayStation 3's new music video service

Last month, Sony launched VidZone for the PlayStation 3 — an on-demand video service that offers thousands of music videos free of charge. With multiple playback options and the ability to create unlimited playlists, it is being heralded as one of the best services to hit the PlayStation 3 since the console launched (mind you, anything looks good compared to PlayStation Home). We spoke to VidZone's Director of Marketing and Sales, Louisa Jackson, about this new service.

PC World: First of all, could you explain what VidZone is for people who are unfamiliar with the service?

Louisa Jackson: VidZone is a free, on-demand music video service on PS3, where you don’t just watch music videos you can actually control your experience. Unlike traditional linear TV, you can stop, pause, rewind, fast forward, skip to the next video or go back and watch your favourite video again and again. Users can also create unlimited playlists, which means you control what you want to watch. If you’re feeling lazy there are at least 20 featured playlists to choose from, which are changed weekly. VidZone has launched with over 10,000 music videos, 4000 artists and 12 main genres; thousands more videos will be added over the coming weeks and months.

PCW: Tell us about your involvement in VidZone — what does your role entail?

LJ: I am the Director of Marketing and Sales, which means I oversee all of the content, production and partner relationships at VidZone. My work involves liaising with record labels to discuss their priorities, upcoming releases and arranging any special exclusives like band interviews and exclusive live recordings. I have a team of editorial and content staff, who are responsible for encoding and publishing all digital content, setting up playlists, selecting artist images, and other essential tasks to ensure the smooth running of VidZone. I am also in daily contact with PlayStation preparing our blogs, events like E3 and Gamescom, speaking to press and looking at the expansion of VidZone, which includes moving into more territories.

PCW: The VidZone service has been launched in a handful of countries, including the UK and Australia. Why were these territories chosen over the US, for example?

LJ: As a UK-based company, it was easier to roll out in territories that VidZone already had footprints in. So far things have gone spectacularly well and we hope to take this success to launch in other territories soon.

PCW: What’s your favourite feature of the VidZone service?

I am now in the habit of rewinding and fast forwarding music videos — so being able to jump to the best moments of a music video is my current VidZone vice!

PCW: How many video updates can PS3 owners expect to see each week?

There will be one catalogue of a few hundred videos updated per week. Currently there is one editorial refresh per week but this will increase soon.

PCW: Last but not least, which VidZone videos would you include in your ideal playlist?

Summer has come to London, so I’m loving the big tunes right now. My current top 10 is:

  1. Tiesto — Adagio For Strings
  2. Pendulum — Slam
  3. Prodigy — Warrior’s Dance
  4. Fatboy Slim — Weapon of Choice (starring Christopher Walken)
  5. Gwen Stefani — What You Waiting For
  6. Foo Fighters — Pretender
  7. Groove Armada — But I Feel Good
  8. 2Pac — California Love
  9. Eminem ft. Dido — Stan
  10. Jay-Z — 99 Problems

I would recommend this device for families and small businesses who want one safe place to store all their important digital content and a way to easily share it with friends, family, business partners, or customers.

Brother QL-820NWB Professional Label Printer

It’s easy to set up, it’s compact and quiet when printing and to top if off, the print quality is excellent. This is hands down the best printer I’ve used for printing labels.

Brainstorming, innovation, problem solving, and negotiation have all become much more productive and valuable if people can easily collaborate in real time with minimal friction.

The print quality also does not disappoint, it’s clear, bold, doesn’t smudge and the text is perfectly sized.

The Huddle Board’s built in program; Sharp Touch Viewing software allows us to easily manipulate and edit our documents (jpegs and PDFs) all at the same time on the dashboard.

The biggest perks for me would be that it comes with easy to use and comprehensive programs that make the collaboration process a whole lot more intuitive and organic
