If you're looking for a primer on desktop publishing - this isn't it. Aimed at experienced design and layout artists, Adobe InDesign f/x & Design is intended to introduce this recent DTP offering and help users quickly produce professional publications.
The book is divided into two sections, Getting up to Speed with InDesign and Delve Deeper into InDesign. It opens with a brief (and enthusiastic) introduction to the new DTP package, and a thorough run-down of all the menus and palettes that comprise the on-screen components. There then follow four chapters covering such basics as setting up documents and dealing with text and graphics.
The second section takes a closer look at more advanced aspects of DTP and InDesign, including colour management and creation; handling long documents, graphic formats and features; converting or exporting an InDesign document to PDF, EPS, pre-press or Web-optimised format.
This isn't just a "read and remember" approach to learning InDesign; there are many hands-on projects to complete, which build on skills learned in previous chapters. The included CD-ROM contains all the text, graphic and InDesign files necessary for these projects, and a full-colour section in the middle of the book shows how the final publications should appear.
By easing the frustration of mastering new software, this book could help make an InDesign fan of even the most die-hard QuarkXPress adherent.
