Virgin unveils unlimited mobile phone tariff in the UK

£65 per month but minutes & texts are capped

Hot on the heels of news that Tesco Mobile has launched an 'unlimited' sim-only tariff that allows mobile phone users to call, text and surf the web as much as they like for a one-off £30 per month, Virgin Media has unveiled a similar deal.

However, there are not many similarities between the two packages. Virgin is charging £65 per month for the package, which is only open to Virgin Media broadband, TV and fixed line customers, compared to Tesco's £30 per month package, which is open to anyone.

The Tesco deal is sim free but Virgin's tariff comes with a choice of two smartphones; the Nokia N86 or the Samsung Jet. Both packages are also subject to a fair usage policy, but while for Tesco this is up to the value of £500, Virgin is setting limits of 3000 cross-network minutes, 3000 Virgin to Virgin minutes, 3000 texts and just 1GB of web surfing each month.

Jonathan Kini, director of mobile at Virgin Media, said: "The £65 per month tariff offers great value with unlimited texts, minutes and web browsing - the perfect combination for high usage customers who want the best technology available, without paying the earth. The addition of these fantastic handsets to the device range demonstrates our commitment to catering for every mobile customer out there."
