Bargain BlackBerry: Crazy John’s $39 BlackBerry Pearl plan

Crazy John’s offers unlimited mobile Internet with the BlackBerry Pearl 8110

Crazy John’s and Research In Motion (RIM) have announced the availability of the Pink BlackBerry Pearl 8110 smartphone from Crazy John stores for $0 upfront on a $39 BlackBerry Service Cap.

The bundled voice and data BlackBerry service plan is the cheapest bundled plan for a BlackBerry handset anywhere in Australia. While the BlackBerry Pearl 8110 smartphone has been available in the local market since 2007, the new pink version updates the smartphone’s look and feel.

Matt Scriven, head of marketing at Crazy John’s, said that this budget offering is part of the company’s marketing scheme aimed at positioning BlackBerrys where the company believes the market is moving: towards a consumer-driven market that allows for the smartphone to be used both in business and social environments.

“This service plan, whilst still providing $150 free talk-time and text, acknowledges a new push by consumers towards using their BlackBerrys more for mobile Internet purposes, where unlimited data packs have become more crucial than talk-time,” said Scriven.

The bundled voice and data plan provides unlimited mobile access to the Internet, allowing unlimited mobile access to e-mail, social-networking sites and Web browsing. This service also enables access to up to 10 supported ISP e-mail accounts, and instant message services such as Yahoo! Messenger and Windows Live Messenger. A fair use policy applies.

The 24-month plan costs $39 per month, and calls are charged at $0.47 per 30 seconds, with a $0.35 flagfall. By comparison the Vodafone BlackBerry Storm $99 cap plan charges calls at $0.35 per 30 seconds, with a $0.35 connection fee.

Despite these high call rates, this service bundle remains the cheapest BlackBerry bundle deal available locally. Telstra offers the BlackBerry 8110 Pearl on a $60 phone plan (with a minimum cost of $1440 over 24 months, plus usage charges).

According to Scriven, the BlackBerry Pearl will appeal to customers thanks to its sleek and compact body when compared to other BlackBerry phones.

“This design highlights the new push towards marketing BlackBerry smartphones to a consumer market,” he said.

The BlackBerry Pearl 8110 has a trackball navigation system, a SureType keyboard, built-in GPS, a 1.3-megapixel camera capable of video recording, and a media player featuring BlackBerry Media Sync, which allows users to sync music from their iTunes or Windows Media Player collection to the smartphone.
