IBM remote control lets users blog about favorite TV shows

New technology lets viewers post updates on Facebook about the latest Lost episode

Ever want to blog about that crazy episode of True Blood or how dark and twisty Meredith is on Grey's Anatomy ?

IBMis developing a television remote control device that helps do just that.

IBM said it has received a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office earlier this year for a remote control device that can be used to blog and post updates on social networking sites, like Facebook, Myspace and Twitter . The remote control, designed by IBM scientists, is geared to let users "autoblog" about whatever they happen to be watching at the time.

A spokesman for IBM said today that the patent was issued in April.

"I don't know of any specific plans at this time to put this into an IBM product," said the spokesman. "I think the bigger possibility would be that it would be licensed by another company."

According to the patent abstract , the remote control should be able to post a snapshot of the show being watched, as well as text about it.

"Technology advances continue to support people's need to stay connected to one another more readily and more quickly," IBM wrote in the patent abstract. "Whether it is the desire to keep and share lists of books that have been read, comments about movies that have been seen, music that has been listened to, or television shows of interest, more than ever, people wish to be able to share their comments with others in real-time as they experience life. In the case of television, for example, one of the joys of watching television is discussing with one's friends the juicy bits of a favorite show or the latest television program."

The IBM spokesman said the new remote control technology has not been named and it's not clear how soon it could reach market.

Last year, IBM received 4,186 patents, he added.
