Sydney, AUSTRALIA – 8 September 2009 – AARNet (Australia’s Academic and Research Network) today announced that the University of New South Wales has upgraded its network connection to AARNet’s recently launched 10-gigabit per second (Gbps) customer access product.

The high-speed connection will allow University of New South Wales researchers to conduct research on greater scales than ever before, with the enablement of new projects that require very high bandwidth or exchange of large amounts of data.

Greg Sawyer, Manager Communication Services at the University of New South Wales said, “When UNSW was offered the opportunity to upgrade to 10Gbps connections from AARNet, UNSW identified the potential it provided to our scientists and researchers for expanding into new areas. The increased bandwidth capacity enables some of our research facilities and innovative techniques to no longer be restricted by bandwidth and will benefit the university’s progressive research community for several years.

“A key development where AARNet’s 10Gbps connection will make a significant contribution is in the new Lowy Cancer Research Centre that UNSW is opening later this year. This will be one of the largest dedicated cancer research centres in the southern hemisphere and Australia’s only fully integrated childhood and adult cancer research centre.”

Chris Hancock, CEO of AARNet, said, “It’s AARNet’s mission to provide Australia’s academic and research communities with access to the best possible network connections, to enable exploration into new areas of research and collaboration. The University of New South Wales now has the power to collaborate and conduct research on a scale like never before, which will allow it to help keep Australia at the forefront of international scientific and academic research.”
