UTS sound and video courses offer skills upgrade

 • 21 October, 2009 15:22

Most of us could cope with missing the latest upgrade in mobile phone technology, but these days sound and video professionals can't afford to lag one second behind the fast-moving developments in recording and production technology.

The University of Technology, Sydney is meeting the challenge with an updated suite of courses on industry-standard software tools, Digidesign Pro Tools and Apple's Final Cut Studio.

The two and three-day intensive courses, taught by leading professionals, are running from 25 November to 9 December in the state-of-the-art facilities of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the UTS City campus.

UTS was the first established Digidesign authorised Pro School in Australia and is an Apple Authorised Training Centre. The upcoming courses will use the latest releases of Pro Tools (version 8) and Final Cut Pro (version 7).

UTS:Pro School instructor Brendan Lloyd is an electronic and acoustic audio/visual arts specialist. He has recorded and mixed many Sydney artists and worked as a mixer on numerous films.

He said it was especially important in the post-production field to keep abreast of the latest developments.

"These courses are constantly updating – every one-and-a-half years there is a new version of the software," Brendan said.

"You don't want to be held back because you don't know how to use the technology to its full potential. It allows you to express and create your ideas as you want them. After that the only limit is your creativity.

"It is possible to learn on your own – to look on the website and get a general idea, but it is quite difficult without a good guide, be that a friend or formal instructor.

"If you need a more structured and formal way of learning, studying these courses to recertify and learn about your product is essential and very beneficial," he said.

Participants in previous courses have included production staff from free-to-air and cable TV, major production studios and the occasional singer-songwriter gathering the skills to do their own recording.
