Two fresh shooter franchises coming in 2010

Sci-fi and post apocalyptic action to debut in 2010

Metro 2033: The Last Refuge

Metro 2033: The Last Refuge

First-person shooter fans looking for a fix after Modern Warfare 2 won't be disappointed, as two new games have already been announced for a 2010 release.

First comes Metro 2033: The Last Refuge, a Ukrainian game based on a novel of the same name by Dmitry Glukhovsky. Set in Russia twenty years after the apocalypse, those who survived have formed societies within the metro stations that sheltered them (apparently in the Russia of the future, all train stations come equipped with mushroom gardens, air and water filters and hermetic locks.) The surface is overrun with horrible abominations the people call "Darkness," and the player must take control of a young man named Artem as he makes his way to the heart of Moscow to seek help for his dying tribe.

Few details have been released regarding Metro 2033's gameplay, but according to a recent European preview published by IGN it seems that developer 4A Games are trying to hit all the high points of a first-person PC experience. Promises of an interactive world, multiple solutions to every problem and enemy AI that adapts to the player's actions have all been bandied about, but we won't know how well the game executes on those promises until THQ brings the game to the U.S. on PC and XBox 360 next year.

If you're burnt out on post-apocalyptic imagery consider Inversion, the recently-announced Namco Bandai sci-fi shooter which promises players a whole new appreciation for gravity. Developed by Saber Interactive (the guys behind Timeshift,) Inversion takes place in a near-future Earth under siege by the Lutadore, alien invaders whose appearance seems to have disrupted gravity.

Players assume the role of police officer Davis Russel (or his neighbor Leo) as he searches for his missing daughter, and the protagonist often stumbles into isolated bubbles where a scrambled gravitational field force players to fight from the walls or ceiling. "Vector Charges" (which flip the game world 90 or 180 degrees) and the Grappler (a device that allows the player to manipulate gravity, solve puzzles and build cover) further round out Inversion's feature suite, and Namco promises the game will redefine expectations when it comes to the XBox 360 and PS3 next year.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
