ATI has jump-started the graphics war this year with the launch of the Radeon 5000 series. First, we saw the HD 5870 emerge as the most powerful single GPU card in the world last month. Now, we have with us the Radeon HD 5770, a part of the ATI's "Juniper" line-up.

Feature-wise what is special about the HD 5770 is its support for DirectX 11 games and applications. Simply put, this is the way forward for graphical applications since Windows 7 allows for DirectX11. Also, the HD 5770 supports Eyefinity technology which allows a single card to output visuals to up to six displays. Like the ATI Radeon HD 5870 we reviewed last month, this card also has a core clocked at 850MHz. In addition to that, it has 1GB of memory, uses a 128-bit memory interface, and has dual DVI, an HDMI and a Display port.

The HD 5770 reference model looks exactly like its elder brother, the HD 5870 albeit a little shorter and lighter. The card runs quite silently, even under duress and its temperature readings were quite a pleasant surprise. At idle it ran at around 46°C in an open case, in an air-conditioned room while at high load the temperature spiked to 56°C. Such temperatures will hardly cause any issues.

When it comes to performance, we believe, Nvidia's GTX 260 is a perfect card for the HD 5770 to compete against in terms of price and features. In the synthetic benchmark tests, the GTX 260 took a lead with figures of 17,044 and 7,320 against the HD 5770's 16,460 and 6,197in 3D Mark '06 and 3D Mark Vantage's High presets, respectively. However, the ATI card soon gained ground with good performances in Crysis and Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. Overall; there is hardly anything to separate the two cards in terms of performance.

Although both the GTX 260 and the HD 5770 are priced in and around the Rs. 10,000 (US$213) mark, we would advise you to buy the ATI card simply because it seems to be the one which will last the distance owing to its support of DirectX 11. To conclude, in the Radeon HD 5770,we have another winner from ATI.

Bottom Line

ATI continues its excellence in the graphics card segment with the new HD5770. The new Radeon gives great performance, is priced reasonably and runs cool.
