LG releases Full HD LED TVs with 'borderless' design

LG SL90 'borderless' television uses LED backlighting for high contrast ratio

LG has announced the retail release of its SL90 and SL80 series LCD televisions, with a 'borderless' design that employs a single sheet of glass over the whole panel front. The 47in and 42in SL90 LCD televisions use LED backlighting and according to LG have a 3,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

The LG SL90 and SL80 TVs eschew the traditional embossed bezel of LCD and plasma flat panel televisions. Similar glass-edge designs have been seen before with models such as Sony's KDL55XBR45, but the LG's completely flat front makes it an attractive proposition for wall-mounting.

With the same LED backlighting system as the Sony KDL55XBR45 and the Sharp LC40LB700X the LG SL90 series is able to dynamically alter sections of the screen's backlight — allowing simultaneous display of bright whites and dark blacks. The 3000000:1 contrast ratio is similar to what Samsung quotes for its LED television range. The SL90 series has a 100Hz refresh rate and can optionally be calibrated by an ISF operator.

Launched at the same time as the SL90, LG's SL80 series features the same borderless design. The series uses conventional CCFL backlighting rather than LEDs, but is distinguished with the use of a 200Hz motion smoothing system — lowering the screen's response time to a fast 2ms.

The LG SL90 is available in stores now, in 42in and 47in screen sizes at $3099 and $3799, respectively. The SL80 ranges in size from 37in to 55in, from a starting price of $1799 to a maximum of $4499 for the largest model.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
