Seattle-based MiKandi LLC has launched the first adults-only mobile applications store for Google Android smartphones. The store is already available for installation from the MiKandi Web site for compatible mobiles, and will offer a range of both free and paid-for adults-only applications.

According to MiKandi, the company was founded by seven people, including former employees of Microsoft, T-Mobile and Comverse, and adult industry veterans. One of MiKandi LLC’s founders, Shane Isbell, began running an alternative Android applications store — SlideME — before the the Android Marketplace’s official launch.

“[MiKandi LLC] wanted to find a niche that was not currently being served and adult applications were at the top of the list,” Jennifer McEwen, one of the company's founders, told PC World. “There are no other adult app stores out there to meet this need of users and developers. So we entered the market with MiKandi to provide value to the mobile application ecosystem.”

The app store is very much under development. Though you can install the store itself, it only offers a single app: a “multi-speed vibrator system” called “Dildroid.”

The MiKandi developer portal is currently invite-only, but MiKandi LLC is about to launch an e-mail campaign aiming to recruit app developers. According to the MiKandi Twitter profile, the response from developers and end users alike has been overwhelming.

The company believes it's only a matter of time before the adult industry joins the mobile application bandwagon. “The adult app market is in its infancy and only a handful of cool adult apps are available,” McEwen said. “Now that the platform is available through MiKandi, it's up to the developers to release their adult apps. Given the level of interest we received just this week, we believe it's only a matter of time before quality adult apps will be launched on MiKandi.”

Support for paid applications is also due to begin soon. Like Apple, MiKandi LLC will have a revenue-sharing agreement with developers. McEwen said that the company will reveal more details once support for these applications is in place.

McEwen told PC World that MiKandi LLC makes clear that the store is only for adults and it will not censor controversial apps in its store provided they are legal. “Unfortunately, there will always be someone who doesn't believe the law applies to them. We take uploading of illegal content (for example, child pornography) very seriously and make sure that all of our developers clearly understand what is allowed on MiKandi through our developer agreement. If illegal content is uploaded we will take it down immediately and if necessary take legal action against the developer in question.”

Though Apple has implemented age restrictions on its app store, it is yet to allow adult-oriented apps on the iPhone and iPod Touch. One app did briefly survive Apple’s stiff submission procedures, only to be pulled from the App Store a few hours later. Adults-only apps such as iPornStudio do exist for the iPhone and iPod Touch, but users have to jailbreak their device and download it from an alternative applications portal like Cydia or Icy. MiKandi LLC is considering porting its app platform to the iPhone, but McEwen said the company is wary because of the need for jailbreaking.

Unlike Apple, Google allows Android users to download and install alternative marketplaces without jailbreaking.

“Our overall goal is not to just be the first adult app store but to dominate the mobile adult application market, with support across multiple platforms," McEwen told PC World. "We want MiKandi to be the first place users go when they are looking for adult applications on whatever device they are on.”

The company plans to port its app platform to BlackBerry devices and Java-compatible mobiles in early 2010, with a Windows Mobile marketplace shortly after.
