Sony has announced via its PlayStation Blog that Heavy Rain, Quantic Dream's highly-anticipated PS3 exclusive, will have a free DLC "Chronicle" available upon the game's release day for customers who pre-order the title. Other customer may have to wait longer and will have to pay $5 to download the content.
The first DLC chapter, entitled "Heavy Rain: Chronicle One ? The Taxidermist," will be an extended version of a scene previewed at E3 in 2008. In the scene, journalist Madison Page sneaks into the home of a suspected serial killer and attempts to investigate the murderer without becoming his victim.
According to the PlayStation Blog post, another DLC episode will be available soon after launch. The Chronicles will each focus on a different one of Heavy Rain's central characters and will take place either before or after the story featured on the disc. Which character do you want to see next?
It looks like providing free day-one DLC to purchasers of new games may just be the latest trend in used games and piracy deterrence. Microsoft tested the waters in 2008 with the Gears of War 2 Flashback Pack, and EA allowed nudity in 2009 with The Saboteur's "Midnight Show."
