Apple backs MPEG-4 radio

Internet radio station Radioio, and IP delivery services provider Limelight Networks LLC have teamed up with Apple Computer to launch a new Internet radio station based on MPEG-4.

The companies worked with Apple using a combination of Apple's QuickTime Broadcaster, QuickTime Streaming Server 4 and the QuickTime 6 MPEG-4 codec to become the first in the industry to deliver a comprehensive MPEG-4-based Internet broadcast.

Apple's QuickTime format was chosen by the companies based on its popularity - to-date, more than 100 million copies of QuickTime have been downloaded, with 300,000 new downloads each day. QuickTime 6 also leverages the new Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) codec in MPEG-4.

President and Radioio founder Michael Roe said: "We're very excited about being able to bring Radioio content to the large and growing base of QuickTime users and folks who are using other ISO-compliant MPEG-4 players.

"We believe MPEG-4 will soon become the industry standard for webcasting. It's already becoming the industry standard for the delivery of audio and video via cellular in pretty much all of Europe and most of Asia."
