Official sales numbers reported by the NPD Group research firm aren't due 'til January 14 -- but Nintendo is pretty confident its holiday sales figures are healthy.

In a press release sent out this morning, Nintendo says that it expects Wii sales for December to top 3 million units. It also estimates that overall New Super Mario Bros. Wii sales since the game's launch in November will clock in near 4 million.

Nintendo seems a little less certain how its handheld systems did. The press release claims that the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo DSI together will "set a new all-time calendar-year U.S. sales record for any console or hand-held system."

We'll see how close Nintendo's estimations are when we get to the 14th.
