Toshiba users go cordless

SkyNetGlobal has just completed Australia's largest 802.11b wireless network, which connects to 27 airport lounges and 13 airports throughout the country and selected major hotels in CBDs.

Under the alliance, Toshiba's corporate customer base, which includes more than 1000 companies, will be able to e-mail and connect to the Internet and office LANs in any area covered by the SkyNetGlobal network without the fuss of wires and phone-plugs.

The alliance was announced at Toshiba's annual mobile computing conference last week in Melbourne. "This is very much where our business is focused this year," says Bruce Lakin, Toshiba Australia's general manager.

Wireless capabilities will be integrated into all Toshiba's upcoming products, making the alliance an important leveraging tool.

The partnership will involve a number of joint marketing initiatives, the first of which will involve the linking of SkyNetGlobal's Web site to Toshiba's homepage and an online facility to subscribe directly to the SkyNetGlobal broadband wireless service.

SkyNetGlobal is the first company in the world to rollout an international subscription-based universal broadband wireless network based on the IEEE 802.11b international standard. Its major shareholders include Cabletron Systems, Qantas Airways, Ernst&Young and Leo Burnett.
