LG Mini (GD880) mobile phone (preview)

LG's Mini (GD880) may not be a smartphone, but its long list of features and striking design are sure to impress.

Featuring a 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, 7.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity and an FM radio, you’d be forgiven for thinking LG’s latest flagship mobile phone, the Mini (GD880) is a smartphone.

Although it’s not technically a smartphone, the LG Mini (GD880) has a number of smartphone-like features including multi-touch technology, over the air synchronisation and a variety of social connectivity features. As per a number of the smartphones unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, it follows the trend of merging social networking contacts into a single, easy to use system.

The LG Mini (GD880) runs an updated version of LG’s S-Class user interface, and we found it both functional and fast in the brief, hands-on time we had with the device. LG's S-Class UI has always claimed good looks, but its performance hasn't always been smooth or effective — if LG can fine tune these issues, then the Mini GD880 may provide a much better experience than previous LG phones.

Surprisingly, it's the Mini's design that has impressed us the most. LG describes it as the “smallest and slimmest 3.2-in touchscreen phone on the market,” at just 10.6mm thin and weighing 99 grams. The square, box-shaped design also differs from the norm and sets it apart from the competition. The combination of matte black and brushed metal with flat edges certainly gives this phone a rather different look and feel.

LG told us it chose to use its own operating system for the Mini because it’s “easier to build the hardware around an operating system that doesn’t have specific boundaries or requirements". With this in mind, we’ve been told to expect the LG Mini to land in Australia in April or May.

If you can afford the price tag, it is well worth the money. It out performs any other laptop I have tried for gaming, and the transportable design and incredible display also make it ideal for work.
