South Australian mobile tech company 2moro mobile has launched an iPhone app that lets WOMADelaide 2010 festival-goers find out who's performing on stage by just pointing their iPhones.

The WOMAdelaide 2010 iPhone app works by using the GPS and digital compass inside the iPhone 3GS to find the user’s direction and location, then the app finds information about the performing artist based on the festival’s itinerary.

Unlike popular music identifying programs such as Shazam that use the iPhone’s microphone to identify songs, the WOMADelaide app only identifies the band playing rather than individual songs being performed.

The augmented reality application throws up a virtual map of the festival onto the screen along with an overlay of performer information. 2moro mobile CEO Peter O’Neill said that the app was designed to help visitors enjoy the festival. "Augmented reality is a cool way to view information on a mobile phone," said O’Neill.

Augmented reality technology may find applications at other music festivals around the country. 2moro mobile is yet to announce the use the same technology for other festivals, though a similar app is available for Adelaide’s 2010 Fringe festival.

2moro mobile representative John Harris said, "It’s just a matter of applying it, reapplying the core technology. It adds a lot of value to walk around and say, 'Who’s that?' It gives convenience you’ve never had before."
