PS3 firmware 3.21 rolls out, causes drama and a hack

Players are reporting console-breaking bugs caused by the update

The Linux-eliminating PlayStation 3 firmware update that many originally hoped was an April Fools' Day joke rolled out on the first of this month. Players are reporting console-breaking bugs caused by the update and already hacker George Hotz has a workaround.

Complaints cropped up on the PlayStation forums about freezing PS3s and endless loading screens within hours of the update.

British site Thinq picked up the story today, adding that the problems seemed mostly to occur on the old "fat" PS3s. Sony hasn't made any public statements regarding these complaints

This morning, Hotz -- whose claim to fame is hacking both the PS3 and the iPhone -- said he had a custom firmware update in development that restores the Other OS option to fat PS3s and possibly even to PS3 Slims.

"No release date yet, use the proxy hack to play online with 3.15," he said. "Note to the people who removed OtherOS, you are potentially turning 100000+ legit users into 'hackers.' There was a huge(20x) traffic spike to this blog after the announcement of 3.21. If I had ads on this site I guess I'd be thanking you."

Sony did not respond to requests for comment on this story.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
