Bungie and Activision agree to exclusive 10-year partnership

Bungie joins Activision, goes multi-platform

Major third party publisher Activision and famed Halo developer Bungie have announced that they have entered into a 10-year exclusive partnership, in which Bungie will create new IP for Activision.

The deal announced between the two companies ensures that Activision Blizzard will have worldwide publishing and distribution rights to future Bungie titles. The terms of the deal have not been announced, nor have any dates been set regarding the commencement of the deal, though it was revealed that this partnership has been in negotiation since July of 2009. Bungie is currently developing Halo: Reach for Microsoft Game Studios, which will begin its multiplayer beta on Monday. All of Bungie's published titles since 2001 have been in the popular first-person shooter series, while Activision has been embroiled in a legal tussle with many employees who worked on their last published first-person shooter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Executives from both companies spoke out about the deal and their enthusiasm for the upcoming partnership. Bungie President Harold Ryan stated ?We chose to partner with Activision on our next IP because of their global reach, multi-platform experience and marketing expertise,? while Activision Blizzard COO said "Bungie has developed some of the most compelling and successful games, multiplayer experiences and thriving fan communities, and this alliance underscores our long-standing commitment to foster the industry?s best creative talent. Our unprecedented partnership with Bungie will enable us to broaden our pipeline of exciting new games as we continue to strengthen our industry position and pursue long-term growth opportunities."

The next game in Activision's popular Call of Duty franchise will be revealed tomorrow night. Keep it tuned to GamePro as we deliver news of that game and other major upcoming titles.
