Sony selling PSP/ PS3 warranties

Sony announces PlayStation Protection Plans for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable

Bought your PlayStation 3 or PSP at the store but didn't think to get a warranty at the time of purchase? Sony is now offering warranties for the PSP and PS3 that will allow customers to extend their warranties within a month or even a year of the console's purchase.

Consumers who have purchased consoles at the likes of GameStop or Best Buy in the last few years have undoubtedly been made aware of retail-backed extended warranties. They have many aliases -- product replacement plans and customer care plans are among the most often used -- but they all perform the same duty of allowing customers to return defective products without having to deal with the hassle of customer service.

Sony is attempting to cut out the middleman (and cut into the often free-money industry that is product insurance) by introducing PlayStation Protection Plans for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Customers who have purchased a PS3 within the past year can extend their system's repair warranties by one year for $45 and by two years for $60. PSP owners have a similar offer of $30 and $40 for the one and two-year extensions, respectively, but can also broaden their plans to cover "accidental damage" like cracked screens. The PSP's accidental damage coverage must be purchased within the system's first 30 days.

We've reached out to representatives from GameStop and Best Buy regarding each company's reaction to Sony's PlayStation Protection Plan. If either company provides a response, we will update this article.
