Telstra drops price, increases allowance of data packs for smartphones

In addition to increased data allowances and lower costs, Telstra has also reduced excess usage rates on all data packs.

Telstra has dropped the price and increased the data allowance of its post-paid browsing packs for smartphones. The more significant changes include the $5 browsing pack offering 30MB of data (up from the previous 5MB), the 1GB browsing pack now costing $39 instead of $59 and the 9GB browsing pack available for $99 rather than the previous $119.

In addition to the increased data allowances and lower costs, Telstra has also reduced excess usage rates on the $5 and $99 browsing packs, though unused data still expires each month on all browsing packs.

"We have significantly increased the included data in each pack, decreased the excess usage rate for most packs, reduced some of the browsing pack prices and introduced 3GB and 6GB plans," said Peter Jamieson, Telstra's executive director of business performance.

Existing Telstra customers can change their current browser pack if they wish without incurring a fee or penalty. The new data packs are available on all new and existing post-paid plans, and can be used with phones like the HTC Desire, which launched last month exclusively on Telstra.

Strangely, the data packs aren't as competitive as their business counterparts &8212; for 1GB of data for business customers is $19 while the same for regular consumers costs $39.
