LG announces 3D LED TVs with integrated BigPond Movies access

LED-backlit 3D TV has 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, BigPond Movies access

The LG INFINIA LX9500 is the first 3D TV using LED back-lighting, with a sheet of 1200 LEDs used on the 55in model.

The LG INFINIA LX9500 is the first 3D TV using LED back-lighting, with a sheet of 1200 LEDs used on the 55in model.

LG will launch its 47in and 55in 3D LED-backlit LCD televisions in mid-May. The INFINIA LX9500 series televisions use a full LED backlight system rather than the edge-lighting employed in Samsung's range of 3D LED televisions. The addition of local dimming allows the screen to dynamically alter brightness in specific screen segments, so bright whites can be displayed alongside dark blacks.

LG quotes an extremely high contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1 for the INFINIA LX9500 range. The TV's come with LG's TruMotion 400Hz frame interpolation system to smooth motion when viewing 2D content. The INFINIA LX9500 series LED televisions can also display 3D content when connected to a compatible 3D Blu-ray disc player — LG's BX860 player will cost $599. Rechargeable active-shutter 3D glasses must also be purchased at $99 apiece. The glasses will last for 40 hours of viewing before needing to be recharged.

The new televisions will also be the first models in the country to feature interactive access to BigPond Movies. The service will offer 1300 standard-definition titles at launch, with more titles — including HD and 5.1-channel surround sound content — to be added in future months.

LG's 47in and 55in INFINIA LX9500 models will be priced at $4099 and $5199 RRP, respectively.
