Aussies and Kiwis paying too much for mobile roaming

Mobile roaming charges 'relatively high'

A joint discussion paper released by the Australian and New Zealand governments reveals that mobile roaming charges for people moving between the two countries are "relatively high"

The Trans-Tasman mobile roaming report was commissioned to analyse the features, service quality and prices that customers have to pay for roaming services between Australia and New Zealand. The paper concluded that although services and features offered to consumers were adequate, prices are excessively high. It also found that customers were not informed about the prices, terms and conditions of mobile roaming.

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, released the discussion paper with the New Zealand Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Steven Joyce.

"The Rudd Government acknowledges consumers' concerns about the costs associated with using international mobile roaming," said Senator Conroy. "These concerns are particularly strong when Australians use their mobile phones after travelling the short hop across the Tasman to New Zealand."

Comments from the general public are being welcomed by the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy. Submissions can be made until 2 July. The discussion paper is available online.
