IDC: Australian mobile broadband speeds on the up

Local networks improved by almost 70 per cent last year

The average mobile broadband speed in Australia has improved by 68 per cent since 2008, according to market analysis firm IDC. IDC research shows that standard speeds across all four Australian mobile broadband networks reached 2941 kilobits per second last year.

Telecommunications analyst for IDC Australia, Mark Novosel, said that the improvements were not the only thing to smile about: each network performed strongly during the nine month testing period.

"In 2009, the performance of mobile broadband improved noticeably in most cases, with a significant boost to average speeds, but more importantly, most networks also demonstrated greater consistency of performance, which provides a more satisfying broadband experience," he said.

Novosel added that Telstra was the leading Telco on IDC’s list once again, ranking strongly against an ever-improving Optus — which was only four per cent behind in second place.

"Optus' performance soared in 2009, scoring similarly to Telstra, although slightly more network fallback was experienced. However, performance was fairly consistent and well above both of VHA’s networks. Optus now provides a viable alternative to Telstra for anyone willing to sacrifice some coverage and speed, in favour of cost savings."
