Valve announces Portal 2 for PlayStation 3

Valve finally makes a game for the Sony PS3

Sony's E3 2010 press conference was full of big announcements, including two previously unknown games -- Heroes on the Move (a platformer starring three of Sony’s cutesy mascots – Jak, Dexter and Sly Raccoon) and Sorcery (a third person adventure that utilises the PlayStation Move). But one of the biggest surprises of the show was the news that Portal 2 will be heading to the PlayStation 3.

This turned out to be the big E3 surprise that Valve has been teasing at for the past few days. Previous Valve games have only appeared on PC and the Xbox 360, with the exception of a Half-Life PS2 port.

After a cheerfully cold message from Portal's in-game nemesis GlaDOS, Valve's co-founder Gabe Newell took to the stage to personally announce the news. He also joked that he was worried about getting punched in the face. (Newell has famously been one of the PS3’s biggest critics).

"We are delighted to announce Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 and believe the Steamworks support included will make it the best console version of the game," he stated. (Note the choice use of the word ‘console’ – obviously PC is still Valve’s machine of choice.) Unlike Sony's press conference, the Valve announcement was short and sweet, with a taste of in-game footage capping off the presentation.
