Transmeta offers developer's kit for Crusoe chip

New computer designs featuring Transmeta Corp.'s Crusoe processor will be easier to create with the company's new system development kit for its flagship TM5800 processor, the company said Wednesday.

The kit will ship as a working motherboard with an 800MHz Crusoe TM5800 processor and include schematics, design guides, processor specifications and additional items. Designers will also find a 3D video graphics accelerator, Ethernet capability, three PCI (peripheral component interconnect) slots, USB (universal serial bus) support, and slots for both DDR SODIMM (double data rate small outline dual inline memory module) and SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM) DIMM memory formats.

Crusoe is based on the x86 architecture, and works with several versions of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system and distributions of the Linux operating system.

The chip is known for its low power consumption, and is targeted at mobile and embedded PCs. However, the Crusoe recently entered the desktop market in the U.S. with a 900MHz TM5800 Crusoe chip in a PC from NEC Corp. Interested designers can purchase a kit for US$995 from Transmeta's Web site, or through distributors.
