Exetel inks agreement with NBNCo

ISP will provide fibre services in Tasmania

According to a newsletter sent to customers of Internet service provider Exetel today, the ISP will begin providing fibre services in Tasmania as part of the rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN).

The newsletter said the company delivered leaflets spruiking the servce to residents of the three towns the NBN has so far been rolled out to in Tasmania — Smithton, Midway Point and Scottsdale.

The ISP will be offering a $0 per month 25 megabits per second (Mbps) fibre plan; instead of a monthly fee the ISP will charge users $2 per gigabyte downloaded. According to the newsletter, this charge may look high "but the costs of Exetel operating in Tasmania are much, much higher than in ‘Mainland’ Australia."

In addition to the 25Mbps NBN fibre service, Exetel is offering 50Mbps service for $25 per month plus $1 per gigabyte downloaded and a 100Mbps for $50 per month plus $0.75 per GB downloaded. All services are offered on a 12-month contract.

Exetel will also roll out residential fibre services that are not currently part of the NBN in NSW and Victoria.

The ISP's CEO John Linton wrote in a July 1 blog entry, "I notice we have received our first applications for the NBN Tasmanian trial as well as the just released (by Exetel) fibre locations offered by Opticomm... The Tasmanian trial will provide a more accurate assessment of how/if Exetel can compete in a future fibre/NBNCo controlled infrastructure and this information, together with the Opticomm results will give us a much better idea of how/if we can make a sensible contribution to future residential fibre users."

Internode, iPrimus and iiNet have previously revealed pricing for their NBN fibre services in Tasmania.
