PC growth slows in June

The PC market was unable to sustain the vigour which surrounded May sales, with market analyst Inform reporting a flatter performance during June.

PC shipments grew just 3 per cent during the month, well below the expectations of analysts, who had been dazzled by the growth rate of June 2001. At that time, winter sales and end-of-financial year sales pushed the growth rate to 33 per cent.

"Despite shortfalls in monthly growth, the overall market continued to show positive expansion year-on-year, with total indirect volume shipments growing by 12 per cent on June 2001," said Inform research director Chris Herbert.

The Compaq brand retained top spot for the month, with 22 per cent market share. HP remained in second place with 19 per cent, followed by IBM and Toshiba.

After stellar sales for the past few months, notebook sales for most vendors dropped during June. However, HP managed to buck the trend. It's sales were up 12 per cent, giving the vendor a 14 per cent share of the notebook market.
