Compaq recalls all 5300, 5600 Presarios

Compaq is voluntarily recalling all of its 5300 and 5600 series Presario desktops after it discovered the PC's 56K modem does not comply with Australian Communications Authority (ACA) specifications.

Manpal Jagpal, Compaq's product manager of Presario desktops, said the recall is strictly voluntary and in no way do the modems pose a danger to customers or their systems. Jagpal said recall is the result of a schematic design change made by the modem supplier between the time of design and production. The fault was identified during a standard Compaq post-production audit.

Compaq has its modems manufactured globally by a third party, but was unwilling to reveal who that is or how much the recall will cost the vendor.

Customers are being urged to contact Compaq directly on 1300 368 369, where they can arrange to have the modem replaced free of charge.

The recall applies to all 5300 and 5600 desktop Presarios shipped since October this year.

The news follows the recall of 56K v90 PCMCIA notebook modems by Swann Communications, after it discovered a fault that may have caused a shock to the user if a lightning strike or electrical surge occurred on the telephone line.

According to Swann's general manager, Lou Stefanovski, the problem was discovered on one batch of modems (model number P100) during routine "ongoing product testing".

About 3500 P100 modems -- including the SwannSmart II PCMCIA (Swann code: SW-M-SS2PC) and MacSurfer PCMCIA (SW-M-MS2PC) laptop computer modems -- were affected, according to Stefanovski.
