Dell offers new power-efficient server

Viking sweeps into the data centre

Dell has launched a new server designed specifically for Web 2.0 applications and aimed at hosting companies. The company said DCS Viking offered extensive savings on power and cooling costs to tap into the growing need to be more energy efficient.

The new server is based on the hyperscale technology for data centres, developed in Berkeley university designed to improves server performance in high-traffic environments. Dell said the Viking servers, which had been designed in conjunction with Intel, did not just deliver on power consumption but were also economic in terms of space, which, with the rising price of data centre real estate, is another consideration faced by IT administrators. In such circumstances traditional rack servers aren't an appropriate option.

The DCS Viking servers offer users with 8 or 12 server nodes in 3U chassis to save space while theshared infrastructure design reduces the number of individual fans per server by 80 per cent and the associated power to cool by up to 50 per cent.

"There is a growing customer segment of web hosting companies with unique power, performance, and enterprise design needs. We have listened to these businesses to learn their pain points and have collaborated with Intel to provide an enterprise-class computing solution that drives down costs while improving efficiency." - Roy Guillen, general manager of Dell's Data Centre Solutions division
