Apple TV runs iOS, hackers likely ready

The Unofficial Apple Weblog confirms that the new Apple TV runs iOS, which could allow hackers to jailbreak it.

You can jailbreak your iPhone, your iPod Touch, and your iPad, but what about your brand new Apple TV? A product reference found in Apple’s iOS is, in reality, the new AppleTV according to The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW), which confirms that Apple's new media streaming gadget is, indeed, an iOS device.

According to TUAW, the product reference was discovered last month and originally listed as "iProd 2,1." A developer found that the reference is now named "AppleTV2,1" in the iOS 4.2 beta.

Of course, this fuels speculation as to whether the new Apple TV can be jailbroken like the iPhone and iPad. Various Websites currently offer advice on how to hack the previous Apple TV to run apps and programs such as Boxee and Sapphire.

Of course, the $99 Apple TV has minimal memory, seeing as it is meant for streaming rather than storing, so jailbreaking might not be as simple as first thought, if it works at all. However, it does have a micro-USB slot, which could allow external storage to be added.

The new Apple TV ships in two weeks, so there is no hard evidence of a hacked model. However, it will be interesting to see how quickly modders take to jailbreaking it and the amazing things done with the hacked device, or how fast Apple try and discourage it.

It’s easy to set up, it’s compact and quiet when printing and to top if off, the print quality is excellent. This is hands down the best printer I’ve used for printing labels.
