Intel's AppUp store adds support for Australian users

Aussie users can buy apps off Intel's new netbook storefront

Intel's AppUp store now allows Australian users to purchase applications. The AppUp application store for netbooks was launched to the public last week at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, but Australian users were restricted to downloading only free applications.

The store now allows Australian users to purchase applications once they add their payment information via the AppUp Centre Web page. Registered users can get to the payment information page simply by clicking on the link that appears in a pop-up screen when they start the steps to purchase an application.

Currently the most popular downloaded applications on AppUp are all free. Prices for paid applications start from 99 cents (US) and can cost over $100 for advanced applications (such as this audio sequencer called GURU). Unfortunately, there isn't a try before you buy option for the applications.

The applications are designed for netbooks and will run at a resolution of 1024x600. Applications downloaded from the store will work on any computer that uses the Intel Architecture as well as the Windows 7 or MeeGo operating systems. While you'll be able to run applications from AppUp on a Core i7 notebook, the applications will be optimised for Intel Atom devices.

Users running MeeGo are not left out. Netbooks and tablets running this Linux-based operating system can use the Moblin link on the AppUp Web site to download the AppUp storefront on their device. You can also run the applications on a Windows 7-based notebook, but they will only be able to run them in windowed mode.

To download applications, users must first install the Intel AppUp application. Once applications are downloaded, they can either be launched through this application or via a desktop shortcut. The AppUp application gives users a list of recently installed applications and also shows if updates are available for them.
