Citrix offers enhancements in XenServer 5.1

Better storage and cloud provision in new version

Citrix has announced a new version of Citrix XenServer claiming to have introduced new functionality to improve storage as companies roll out desktop virtualisation and ability to support cloud services.

The company has introduced a function called Avanced Storage Optimisation for VDI (virtual desktop integration) for Xen Server 5.1, claiming that it would make VDI deployments more

cost effective by offloading all temporary desktop read-write traffic from expensive storage systems onto server-side spinning disks or high speed solid state drives (SSDs). The system uses a Citrix technology called Intellicache which identifies which data of the data is temporary or non-persistent data, and consequently does not need to be saved in an expensive SAN or NAS system.

Citirx has also introduced a concept called Integrated Virtual Switching, that makes it easier for system administrators to manage traffic from different sources: ie internal data centre and cloud providers. The new technology, which builds on industry standard protocols like OpenFlow, can be used to provide administrators with an integrated network fabric for managing on-premise and off-premise resources.

Citrix is also claiming that the company is picking up market share in the fast-growing server virtualisation market. The company said that it had just signed up its 50,000 enterprise customer and now had 50 percent of the Fortune 500 - this still leaves it some way behind VMware which claims penetration in all the top companies - but Citrix also points to its growth among cloud providers and in desktop virtualisation,
