AMD launches 1GHz mobile Duron

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) is rolling out a 1GHz version of its mobile Duron processor, the company announced Monday.

Compaq Computer Corp. is the first major PC company offering systems based on the processor. It is offering the chips in configure-to-order versions of its Presario 700 series of notebooks immediately, from the company's Web site, AMD said in a statement.

AMD launched the mobile version of Duron, its entry-level processor, in January at speeds of 600MHz and 700MHz. The mobile Duron features 192K bytes of on-chip cache memory and a 200MHz front side bus, as well as support for AMD's 3DNow Professional technology.

The processors will be available from other vendors in the first quarter of 2002, AMD said. Other companies that have adopted previous AMD processors include Hewlett-Packard Co. and Sony Corp.

The 1GHz mobile Duron is expected to be generally available in the first quarter of 2002, priced at US$160 in 1,000-unit quantities, a standard measurement in chip sales.
