Motorola Defy rooted: Great for newbie hackers

An XDA forum member has put together an instructional guide for how to easily root the Motorola Defy.

The guys over at XDA Developers Forums have been busy hacking once again. This time they turned their attention to the Motorola Defy, which was released on November 3rd (and introduced on Oprah for that matter). Forum member Pedrodh assembled up a straightforward guide that details how to hack the Defy. The hack allows you to add various types of apps that require a rooted phone to be installed. The root can be done with ADB commands by simply opening the debug option on the Defy and then using the provided code.

But if you're looking for an even simpler root method, there's also a "one-click root" for various mobile devices called z4root, as various XDA forum members pointed out. It's even available on the Android market.

Jailbreaking your phone is still risky business, since you could end up with a bricked phone if something goes wrong, so proceed at your own risk. But as Pedrodh points out in the thread, his how-to is great for hacker newbies to get their feet wet and fully understand what goes into a good root.
