AMD demos 0.13-micron Thoroughbred processor

In a private meeting room at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) this week is giving its customers a glimpse at upcoming additions to its product line with the demonstration of two unreleased products: a 0.13-micron Thoroughbred processor and an Athlon XP 2000+ processor.

Due to be released in the first half of next year, Thoroughbred is the 0.13-micron version of AMD's Athlon processor family. Current versions of the Athlon are produced using a 0.18-micron process. Three versions of Thoroughbred are expected to be released when the chips hit the market next year: a desktop version, a mobile version, and a server version for use in multiprocessing systems, including workstations.

The Thoroughbred demonstration machine on display at Comdex included an AMD 760 chip set and 256M bytes of DDR SDRAM (Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic RAM). AMD officials would not reveal the clock speed of the demonstration Thoroughbred.

The Athlon XP 2000+ was shown running on a PC using Via Technologies Inc.'s KT266A chip set with 256M bytes of DDR SDRAM. AMD officials would not disclose additional details of the processor, including the release date. "It's around the corner," said Catherine Abbinanti, an AMD spokeswoman. Currently, the company's fastest processor is the Athlon XP 1900+, which runs at 1.6GHz.

Both demonstrations were made using closed PC cases that did not allow components to be viewed by observers.
