LG Optimus Black Android phone (preview)

LG Optimus Black preview: The Optimus Black Android phone has a NOVA display that is claimed to offer twice the brightness of screens on competing smartphones

LG is best known for producing budget models when it comes to mobile phones, but its latest Optimus range is anything but entry-level. The latest cab off the rank is the LG Optimus Black, a slim and stylish Android phone with what the company calls a 'NOVA' display.

The standout feature of the LG Optimus Black is its 4in capacitive NOVA display, which uses the same IPS technology seen in the iPhone 4. However, according to LG the Optimus Black screen has an outdoor brightness of 700 nits, which is almost twice the brightness of most other smartphone screens. In addition, LG claims the NOVA display is much more power efficient than IPS or AMOLED screens, resulting in much better battery life.

The LG Optimus Black is expected to last up to two days before it needs recharging; a significant win over most other smartphones which usually need to be charged every night.

LG has also emphasised the Optimus Black's design: The phone is just 9.2mm at its thickest point, and the design is tapered towards the sides so it's just 6mm thick towards the edges.

The LG Optimus Black will be powered by a 1GHz processor, has a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, a microSD card slot for extra memory, and will run the 2.2 'Froyo' version of Google's Android platform. LG claims the Optimus Black will be upgradeable to the latest 2.3 'Gingerbread' version of Android.

The LG Optimus Black will launch in Australia around May.
