Fujitsu selects Symbian OS for 3G phones

Fujitsu Ltd. has signed a licensing agreement with Symbian Ltd. to develop its upcoming 3G (third-generation) mobile phones to use the Symbian operating system, the companies announced Wednesday.

Fujitsu has decided to use Symbian's operating system due to the fact that it is an open software platform, allowing Fujitsu to take advantage of a wide range of third-party multimedia and entertainment services for consumers, the companies said in a statement.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Symbian is co-owned by Nokia Corp., L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co., Motorola Inc. and Psion PLC, and has licensed its software to them. Other Symbian licensees include Siemens AG as well as Japanese mobile-phone manufacturers such as Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd., Sony Corp. and Kenwood Corp.
