ZTE supplying 4G LTE TDD/FDD network gear to Swedish company

Hi3G wants the dual mode network because TDD spectrum costs less than FDD spectrum

A China backed telecommunications technology known as LTE TDD is being used to build new high-speed 4G (fourth generation) networks in Sweden and Denmark, highlighting the spread of the technology.

Chinese network equipment supplier ZTE is providing mobile operator Hi3G Access AB the gear to build the new network. LTE TDD (Long-Term Evolution Time-Division Duplex) is one of two LTE technologies that allow for higher data speeds than current 3G (third-generation) networks. The other is LTE FDD (frequency division duplex).

ZTE said Hi3G's new network will be the world's first to use both LTE TDD and LTE FDD technologies in dual mode. Data speeds on the network will be able to reach up to 100 Mbps. Analysts have said by deploying both technologies, a mobile network can more efficiently handle phone calls as well as data downloads and uploads.

Across the world there has been a growing interest among telecom operators to use LTE TDD technology in building their 4G networks.

China Mobile, the country's largest mobile carrier with 594 million customers, has been the major supporter of TDD technology. Last month, the carrier along with others including India's Bharti Airtel and Vodafone launched a new initiative to promote the technology as a global standard.

China's government has also begun large-scale trials with LTE TDD, with the intention of building commercial 4G networks using the technology. Chinese network equipment supplier Huawei has also said it has started to work with telecom operators to build networks using both LTE TDD and LTE FDD technology.

The Chinese government encourages the development of homegrown standards such as TD-SCDMA (Time-Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) and LTE TDD so it can reduce reliance on foreign technologies, and has helped support them through research subsidies and industry development funds.

China Mobile is the country's champion of TD technology, and has worked with companies in Japan, Italy, Pakistan, Taiwan, South Korea and elsewhere to build networks or test networks.
