Nokia Drop sends links, images from PCs to smartphones

The application is available for Symbian smartphones and Firefox or Chrome

Nokia Beta Labs has released Drop, an application that allows users to send images and links from a browser to a Symbian smartphone, according to a Tuesday blog post.

Nokia may have chosen Windows Phone as its future smartphone operating system of choice, but the company is still working to improve the doomed Symbian.

The Nokia Drop application is available for Symbian version 3 and S60 5th Edition based smartphones. The browser extension is available for Mozilla's Firefox 3.6 and 4.0 and Google's Chrome 10. In Firefox 3.6, the Drop icon may not appear automatically after installation, but it can be added by customizing the toolbar, according to Nokia.

A video posted by Nokia on YouTube demonstrates the application on an N8.

At first, users will be able to change their phone's homescreen wallpaper, send an image or send a link to their phone. The last feature is already available to Android users via Google's Chrome to Phone Extension. Drop's underlying infrastructure can be used to send a wide variety of content between browsers and smartphones, and more features will be added to the application, the blog post said.
