VMware to ship virtualization clients for Android, Mac OS X

Later this year Mac users will be able to access virtual desktops without a network connection

VMware will ship a desktop virtualization client for Android Honeycomb-based tablets at the end of the second quarter or beginning of the third quarter, according to Vittorio Viarengo, vice president of End User Computing at VMware.

Computerworld feature Virtualization 101: What is virtualization?

VMware may have been late to the game, but now the company is stepping up its tablet push. Following the March launch of the View Client for iPad, the company has ramped up work on the Android version, Viarengo said.

By installing View on a tablet, users can access their virtual Windows desktops, applications and data from anywhere, according to Viarengo. With clients for iOS and Android, VMware will cover most of the devices that people care about, Viarengo said.

Users of Research In Motion's upcoming PlayBook will also be able to access virtual desktops using a View client of their own, but Viarengo doesn't know when that client will arrive.

But the platform users really want is Mac OS X. Later in the year, VMware will start shipping a version of Fusion, VMware's software for running Windows on Apple's computers, which becomes the Local Mode for View on Macs. Local Mode allows users to run managed virtual desktops locally without a network connection.

The company is also working on a PCoIP client for Mac OS X. PCoIP is the protocol VMware uses to deliver remote desktops. Eventually the two products will merge into one, Viarengo said.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre x360

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga 910

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.
